We acknowledge the Turrbul and Jagera peoples as Traditional Custodians of this land, and pay respect to Elders past and present. We honour their deep and ongoing connection to land, food, and culture.

Mum told me that back in the ’70s, the height of sophistication was cheese and fruit skewers stuck into an orange.

An orange. Apparently it was considered the centrepiece.

No slate boards, no figs artfully fanned, no micro herbs for garnish, just a citrus holding it all together. And honestly? I kind of love it.

Because it’s such a perfect snapshot of that era, simple, a little kitsch and totally confident in its own charm. They didn’t overthink it. They just made it fun.

So here I am, decades later, in full 70s mode, making a platter that owes everything to the women who threw parties with fruit, cheese and toothpicks.

Because a pretty platter never goes out of style, and neither do you Mum ❤️

Turmeric Quinoa ‘Tabbouleh’

Quinoa is a bit of a shape-shifter, it soaks up whatever flavour you throw at it.
 Today? A quick golden salad: turmeric infused quinoa, baby spinach, currants, almonds, and spring onion. Oh, and optional roast pumpkin for some creaminess if you’re in the mood.
 Ten minutes of chopping, fifteen minutes of simmering, and you’ve got a bowl that’s light, nutty, a little sweet, and quietly powerful.

Ingredients (serves 2, easy to double)

* Quinoa – ½ cup, rinsed
* Ground turmeric – ½ tsp
* Sea salt – ¼ tsp
* Black pepper – a few grinds
* Water – 1 cup
* Optional: Butternut pumpkin (small cubes)
* Baby spinach – 1 cup, finely chopped
* Currants – 2 tbsp
* Slivered almonds – 2 tbsp
* Spring onion – 2, finely sliced
* Juice of ½ lemon

Directions

1. Optional roast pumpkin: Heat oven to 200 C. Chop pumpkin into small cubes, toss with pepper, salt and olive oil (option: add chopped rosemary). Spread on a baking tray and roast for 20 minutes, turning once.
2. Rinse the quinoa thoroughly under cold water.
3. Place quinoa, turmeric, salt, pepper, and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat. Cover and simmer 15 minutes until water is absorbed. Remove from heat, cover, and let steam for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
4. While quinoa cooks, chop the spring onion and spinach.
5. In a large bowl, combine warm quinoa with spinach, currants, almonds, and spring onion.
6. Finish with lemon juice and a drizzle of olive oil. Toss gently and adjust seasoning.

💬 Serving Note
 Best served just warm, when the spinach wilts slightly into the grains. It makes a fresh side for grilled fish, tofu or chicken. Or my favourite, Harrisa toasted chickpeas 😋

 But the stump is where the sweet crunch lives. 🥦✨

You don’t really need a recipe for this, just grate it with a food processor, add whatever hard veg is hanging around (carrot, radish, beet, apple if you’re feeling sweet).

Mix it with a punchy dressing, toss in some green leaves, and you’re done.

That’s broccoli at its thriftiest, and it’s tastiest.

Black Risotto with Zucchini & Pomegranate Salad

What does a Nutritionist bring home from Croatia?

Well, I came home with olive oil from Brač, a limestone pot of salt from Ston, and hand-embroidered placemats from - @souvenirs.bachan - the shop my mum told me I couldn’t miss.

Inside, Lena told me how she works a city job by day, embroiders in winter with her family and friends, and sells those linens in summer.

Generations of thread stitched into something lasting. How beautiful are they in the photo (though it doesn’t do them or the risotto justice!)

And of course, I carried home a cookbook. Inside was the recipe for Crni Rižot, Black Risotto.

But it called for gutting a cuttlefish and removing the ink sac.

Tradition, yes. My kitchen reality, no.

So here’s my version: squid from the fishmonger, a jar of squid ink, slow-cooked tomatoes, olive oil, and a bright zucchini + pomegranate salad on the side.

Dark, briny, deeply satisfying, balanced by sweet, fresh brightness.

It’s not strictly traditional. But it’s delicious, and it’s a way of keeping the Adriatic on my plate.

What does a Nutritionist bring home from Croatia?

Well, I came home with olive oil from Brač, a limestone pot of salt from Ston, and hand-embroidered placemats from - @souvenirs.bachan - the shop my mum told me I couldn’t miss.

Inside, Lena told me how she works a city job by day, embroiders in winter with her family and friends, and sells those linens in summer.

 Don’t just visit the old town, hide inside it.

By midday the streets flood with cruise ship crowds, the heat radiates off stone, and you wonder how anyone survives it.

But slip into an upstairs apartment, behind thick medieval walls, and the city suddenly exhales.

Mornings are for walking the walls as soon as they open, before the sun scorches the stone.

Afternoons are for fjaka, that Croatian art of doing absolutely nothing, ideally with a plate of black risotto or a simple salad that tastes better than it has any right to.

Evenings? Gelato, alleys, music, and the glow of lanterns on polished steps.

Everywhere, the city carries its history openly, the churches, the monastery cloisters, the defence walls, even the map that still shows where bombs fell in the 1990s. It’s not hidden. It’s remembered.

Reading The Pillars of the Earth here felt almost uncanny. Follett’s cathedrals, Dubrovnik’s stone, both testaments to the stubborn human will to build, to endure, to tell stories in stone.

Dubrovnik isn’t just a backdrop. It’s a witness. Centuries of footsteps, struggles, celebrations, all still echoing in its walls.

 But the centuries didn’t just leave it intact, they left it inhabited.

Today, you sip espresso under ancient columns. The fishmonger works in the shadow of the emperor’s old wall. There’s gelato on nearly every corner, cold and sweet in the heat of the day.

This isn’t history frozen. It’s history fermented, alive, evolving, richer with time. The stones are chipped, the mortar is weathered.
 But the city still breathes, through its walls, through its people, through the smoke of lunch drifting from a courtyard kitchen.

Here’s a recipe share from the night:

YOGURT STRAWBERRY LOVE BITES

✅1 1/2 cups fresh Strawberries (chopped)
✅1 cup Plain Greek Yogurt ✅1 tbsp Raw Honey
✅1/2 tsp Vanilla Paste
✅1 1/2 cups Dark Chocolate Chips
✅1 tbsp Coconut Oil
✅Dried rose petals or Sea Salt (flaky) to top them off

1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a bowl combine the strawberries, greek yogurt, honey and vanilla paste, mix well.

3. Spoon the yogurt mixture onto clusters (about 2 tablespoons) on the prepared baking sheet.

4. Transfer the baking sheet to the freezer for about 2 hours, until completely frozen.

5. Combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a bowl and microwave on high in 30 second intervals until melted. Stir with a spoon to fully combine.

6. Remove clusters from the freezer and dip into the chocolate until fully coated, use a fork to remove and be quick!

7. Transfer back to the same baking sheet and garnish with dried rose petals or sea salt. Repeat until all clusters are coated, then place in the fridge until the chocolate has hardened.

Serve from the fridge and enjoy! Soooo yummy 😋

“I think it’s really a swan, like the ugly duckling”, says my little nephew.

We’re at City Chicks in Stamford picking up ducklings for a 2 night sleepover and amongst the fluffy yellow ducklings is this skinny brown (my nephew insists grey) little puff ball.

“Can we get that one?”

We did get that one. It temporarily became known as Jimmy, plus a yellow ducky the girls named Nipper.

Our duckling sleepover was several days of cuteness overload, especially when they went for their first swim (in a tray with a couple of inches of lukewarm water). Watching their instinctive behaviour as they ducked and dove, splashed and played around, then stood up tall to shake the water off. Adorable.

They snuggled in our hands, jumped around like their legs had springs and splashed their drinking water everywhere. Everywhere.

The whole time, my nephew looked for signs Jimmy was really a swan. “It’s neck is longer than Nippers”, “It dives like a swan”, “See how it sits in the water”.

In my nephews eyes, Jimmy was already the most beautiful swan and not just a skinny brown duckling. 🦢 #nownourished

🤓 Wow, the last few weeks have been intense, attached to my laptop wrapping up my final research project for Uni.

Gotta say, statistical analysis is my least favourite pastime and turning raw data into information is tedious work. I think my brain temporarily shut down after I summited the report. 🥴

Exciting times ahead though. I’m doing a University Summer program on nutrigenomics.

It’s the same when we want to change our eating and lifestyle habits. We want to do it but obstacles, that only exist in our mind, prevent us from moving forward.

Words, whether said out loud or in our mind, are a powerful force and lately I’ve been reminding myself of this Arthur Ashe quote, it soothes my overwhelm so I can take the next step.

“I don’t know where to start” - Start where you are.

“I don’t have the right tools” - Use what you have.

“I’m overwhelmed” - Do what you can.

Each little step moves us closer to where we want to be. #nownourished

Starting new things is often challenging and at times overwhelming, we want to be at the end before we’ve even begun.

Being new to the online business world, my head spins with all the things I need to learn to turn my ideas into a tangible form.

Finding it hard to relax?

🥰 Legs-up-the-wall (Viparita Karani) is my favourite yoga pose when I’m feeling particularly restless and jittery, calms me right down and feels sooo good.

You just sit side-on to a wall, shimmy your hips around as you lay down and walk your legs up the wall to make the body into an L-shape.

If you find you’re a long way from the wall, wiggle a little closer until it feels comfortable.

You can keep your legs straight up or open them wide, experiment with what feels good.

Focus on your breath or find a pretty book to look at pictures 📚

💦 Boiling water creates change 🔥

🤔 Not sure about you, but I was pretty over-cooked in the beginning of TWT (These Weird Times) and turned to mush.

But you know what?

All I needed was to change the recipe, combine a few extra ingredients and create a new dish.

💕 That’s the wonderful thing about being human, we are change makers. The boiling water just speeds us up.
